OOps… She’s Done it AGAIN!

Youth Advisory Board member Summer Montileaux wants to be a pediatrician so she can help children in her home community on the Pine Ridge Reservation. She’s not waiting for tomorrow to start changing her own life and the lives of those around her.

Summer’s GenerationON Funded Gardens

Summer applied for and received a Make Your Mark on Hunger grant from GenerationOn to help address food shortages. Soon, you’ll see Summer and her team working with LCE to build potted vegetable gardens for homes in her community, which they can start inside this Spring and then transfer to an outside garden.

Summer’s commitment to healthy food and food scarcity issues is not new — she applied a prior grant from Disney and Friends towards educating her peers about the importance of healthy food choices, exercise, and strategies to find healthy food in their communities at an LCE Youth Summit. Following the panel discussion she led a youth group in the assembly of 100 bags filled with healthy food options for local families, funded in part, by the Disney grant. She also made AIDS/HIV Awareness initiatives for the 2014 Pow Wow and designed t-shirts for a teen holiday party that she ran in Rockyford.

Summer’s Stepping UP for Education

Other big news: Summer applied for and was accepted into the prestigious Scarsdale STEP program, an intensive two-year college preparatory program in Scarsdale, New York that boosts talented youth from across the country and helps them navigate the college placement process. Summer, currently a sophomore at the Red Cloud Indian School, will spend her Junior and Senior years at Scarsdale High School, where she will receive intensive academic support to prepare her for a competitive college environment followed by medical school.

Please join us in congratulating Summer on her latest accomplishments!
