Please join us in congratulating Lakota Children’s Enrichment’s Youth Advisory Board Chair Keith Martinez on his acceptance to the very prestigious and competitive Public Policy & International Affairs (PPIA) Summer Institute at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public Policy & International Affairs at Princeton University. PPIA is a consortium of top Public Policy Schools that prepare a select group of college juniors for advanced degrees and careers serving the public good.

The PPIA Summer Institute at Princeton provides participants with the tools for critical thinking, speaking, writing and quantitative reasoning, and with the skills and experiences necessary to create, analyze, implement, evaluate and affect policy in a multicultural, multiethnic society. The seven-week program is structured to strengthen skills that are core to policy analysis; microeconomics, statistics, writing, public speaking and organization/time management.

Keith, from Kyle SD on the Pine Ridge Reservation, is a Junior at Villanova University where he is majoring in Communication. Over the last two years he has received a number of awards for his service with LCE:

  • In 2014 he was named a Champion for Change by the Center for Native American Youth at the Aspen Institute;
  • He was named a National Child Awareness Month Ambassador by Youth Service America, a youth service representative for the State of South Dakota, for the 2013-14 season;
  • He received a Bill and Melinda Gates Scholarship and a Presidential Scholarship to attend Villanova University, where he is a Junior;
  • He is a graduate of  the Scarsdale STEP program, which brought him to Scarsdale NY for his last two years of High School to participate in an intensive college preparatory program for talented youth.

LCE President Maggie Dunne said: “We are so proud of Keith’s dedication to higher education and his commitment to give back to his community. His willingness to step out of his comfort zone time and time again to achieve goals is inspirational. He is a remarkable role model for youth who might question the value of education.”
