Nora Steinman wanted to bring some cheer to children on Pine Ridge Reservation in the holiday season, so she proposed that her family ask guests attending their holiday open house to bring a toy.
It just took the addition of one line to her family’s Holiday Party invitation — the invitation read: “Help us make a child’s holiday season brighter. We will be collecting new, unwrapped toys, books and games for the children of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota.” The invitation also included a link to the Lakota Children’s Enrichment Inc. website, and Nora reports “even some people who could not attend the party dropped by with bags of gifts!”
The final talley: more than 250 toys are on their way to the Pine Ridge Reservation (along with hundreds of toys, party materials and toiletries sent separately by Lakota Children’s Enrichment).
Most of the toys are going to parties that Lakota Children’s Enrichment is sponsoring in Kyle (where Santa will be Keith Janis) and at the Boys and Girls Club in Pine Ridge (where Santa will be Keith Martinez). Huge oversized floor puzzles and some of the oversized toys went to the American Horse School in Allen, where there is a day care center and preschool.
This is the second year that Nora’s family collected toys for Pine Ridge. Last year they collected over 150 toys and this year the total was more than 250 toys. We can’t wait to see how much they collect next year! (haha)(no pressure, really).
If you think that you cannot be involved, you are so wrong! It’s easy and it’s never too late!
